What really troubles me about Martin Jol's acitivity, or lack thereof, is the sense that he has no real vision for this team. When Roy had a chance to bring players in it was all part of a plan that Fulham would not score very many goals, but we would not concede many either. Our opponents were in for a 90 minute slugfest that may see one goal scored at best. But we knew what we were and what Roy was doing.
With Jol, I have no such feel even after 101 matches. I thought we were going to be more creative and more free flowing. But clearly we lack pace and our attack seems to bog down just past midfield. The latest Opta Evaluation shows that our wingers are not really wingers, but merely central midfielders playing slightly wider. How can one have a free flowing attack if we are bunching up in the midfield?
The other directive I thought Jol had was to make our team younger. I cannot fault the signing of last year's savior, St. Berbatov, who is above the age of 30. But Scott Parker is not young. Boateng is 30. I love Bent, but he's 29. The still unseen Amorebieta is 28. Meanwhile, Kerim Frei is off to Turkey and Matthew Briggs may be loaned out again. So, are we getting younger or not?
There is little argument that Jol is not an in-game tactician. I can accept that if he fields a squad with quality and who have a plan of how they are going to play. I think we are close to the quality. What is clearly lacking is the plan. I find it very hard to believe that Jol was successful at other clubs without having a plan, so that begs the question "What is he trying to do with us?"
From my seat, it appears he is simply turning the players loose to play and hope that magic happens. If you are a top 5 club loaded with talent, maybe that will work in the short term. At a mid-level club like Fulham, I think you need more direction. You cannot rely upon your former players to impart the wisdom and talent on to the others. So, Jol either needs to get a vision, clarify his vision, or get someone to assist to can implement his vision.
