This was an interesting game considering the end result. Fulham and Newcastle had their chances to score, but neither side could get a goal at St. James' Park. Fulham continue to be masters of the draw in 0-0 result at Newcastle.
It was a very entertaining first half. Newcastle came out strong and had Fulham under pressure for about the first 10 minutes. Andy Carroll had come as advertised. He was a huge presence up front, and Newcastle were constantly looking for him. I credit Brede Hangeland for doing a nice job on limiting Carroll's scoring chances in the first half.
Fulham would start to get control of this match around halfway through the first half. The best chance for Fulham came in the 31st minute. Clint Dempsey had a great shot on net just outside of the box. Krull made a nice save on the shot.
Newcastle would have their best chance of the first half in the 36th minute. Off of a corner kick, Andy Carroll would have a great shot in the box that was nicely saved by Schwarzer. The ball would go out to Lovenkrands who had a great shot that again was saved by Schwarzer. Fulham dodged a bullet in this scenario.
The rest of the first half would go back and forth between the teams. However, when the half ended, the score was still 0-0.
The second half started similar to the first as Newcastle started strong. In the 47th minute, Lovenkrands had a nice shot on net that was nicely saved by Schwarzer.
Newcastle followed up that effort in the 52nd minute. In a flurry of play, Andy Carroll had a nice strike on net that was again saved by Schwarzer.
Fulham's best chance of the game came in the 70th minute. Fulham had a corner kick, and the ball got to Etuhu who headed it to Dembele. His shot hits the crossbar. This was a golden opportunity for Fulham.
Honestly, from that point on Newcastle controlled the game, and had Fulham under constant pressure. Newcastle's last opportunity of the match came in the 87th minute, with Carroll having another inside the box that just goes wide.
The rest of the match there would be a good amount of back and forth between the teams. However, neither team could get that allusive goal. The game ended tied 0-0.
I left this game impressed with the play of Newcastle. This was a tough match and Fulham should be happy to get the draw. I also watched a future star in Andy Carroll for Newcastle. He is such a physical presence, and luckily Hangeland did a great job on him.
For Fulham, the back four did a great job controlling the strikers of Newcastle. Mark Schwarzer was again in top form. Danny Murphy played great in central midfield. Up front, I think Dembele is so close to really breaking out. He was very impressive today.
So, Fulham again show that they can compete on the road, but can't figure out a way to win. Next week it doesn't get much easier for the Cottagers. Manchester City come to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. The Cottagers will need to score next week if they plan on winning.
