I certainly was one fan that was very tired of all of the stories this summer linking Mark Schwarzer to a possible move to Arsenal. In the end, Fulham did not deal him to the Gunners. However, with the January transfer window coming up I have changed my opinion on Schwarzer. The Australian goalkeeper will be out of contract at the end of the season. About a month ago I wrote that I would not be against Schwarzer leaving as long as Fulham found a suitable replacement. I have completely changed my mind. I think Fulham should do whatever they can to sign Schwarzer to a new deal to keep him at Fulham in the future.
What has changed my mind? Well, I guess I needed to be reminded of what an exceptional goalkeeper he continues to be. After getting off to a tough start, Schwarzer has been instrumental in keeping Fulham in many games. He was tremendous against Everton and Chelsea. I don't need to be reminded anymore. Fulham should make every effort to keep him at Craven Cottage.
Based on what I am reading lately it sounds like Mark Hughes is going to try very hard to hold on to Schwarzer. According to Sky Sports, Fulham are in the process of trying to make a new agreement with the Australian goalkeeper.
The big question is will Schwarzer commit to Fulham? According to the Sidney Morning Herald, the situation with Fulham and Schwarzer is unsettled at this point for his future. So, unfortunately I think Fulham fans are going to have to wait once again to see how everything shakes out with Schwarzer.
I am hoping he decides to sign a new deal and stays at Craven Cottage in the future. Fulham definitely need a top notch goalkeeper, and Schwarzer plays at an elite level right now for the Cottagers.
