This whole season is just one big late goal. Another one of these 'late goals', this time from Cauley Woodrow, meant that managed to escape yesterday's game with Huddersfield Town with a score of 1-1.
The super hot day (and game) got off to an insanely fast-paced start, with Huddersfield having the first effort of the game just four minutes in, when a free kick from us flew straight into the path of Jacob Buttersfield, his 40-yard strike flying wide. At the other end, we replied when Alexander Kacaniklic's left footed effort from the edge of the box ended up sailing over the bar. Shaun Hutchinson had to come off after a collision with Harry Bunn. Nikolay Bodurov replaced him. Butterfield let another shot fly in the 18th minute, this time from 20 yards out, forcing Lonergan to parry the attempt away. However, the rebound met Jacob Davidson, whose cross was fortunately cleared by our defence. Just three minutes later, a corner from Jamie O'Hara met Dan Burn, whose header rocketed into a Huddersfield player, just near the line. On the 30 minute mark, a nice spell of possession ended with O'Hara launching a long distance effort, before Joe Murphy parried the effort behind the net. Another attempt from Butterfield in the 34th minute forced Lonergan into a diving save, before Murphy held a low shot from O'Hara at the other end. Ex-Fulham man Mark Hudson flicked a corner from Davidson just wide to end the first half.
The visitors had the best chance of the game just four minutes into the second half, when Kay Voser's clearance bounced off Burn, into the path of Sean Scannell, but Lonergan dived at his feet in a brave effort to save the ball. Moussa Dembele curled a shot over the bar in the 55th minute, following some good pressure from the Fulham offensive. This kicked off another good spell of possession, with McCormack curling a free kick into the direction of Dembele, his header being amazingly saved by Murphy. Huddersfield's reply put them in front, when Bunn cut in from the right and fed Nahki Wells in the box, who shot past Lonergan and into the net. 1-0.
Lonergan collided with a post as he saved a header from Scannell, 70 minutes in, but he was okay to play after recieving treatment. The resulting corner by Davidson resulted in a header from Hudson flying over. We came back with a ton of pressure, with Joel Lynch blocking a shot from Tom Cairney, before Kacaniklic was replaced by Woodrow just after. Hudson was booked in the 77th minute for cutting down Ross McCormack, the resulting free kick led to a header from Dembele but unfortunately it missed. The Frenchman came even closer to goal in the 84th minute, but his header from a Jazz Richards cross wennt wide. Bunn cut past Richards at the other end, however his low shot was deflected behind Lonergan at the near post. To end the four minutes of injury time, Cairney's curling free kick was volleyed by Woodrow into the back of the net, to tie the game 1-1. I don't know if we can take these results much longer, but if we lose our League Cup showdown with Sheffield United on Tuesday, we are in trouble.
