Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta has departed South West London in a deal that sees the Venezuelan join La Liga outfit Sporting Gijón.
The 31 year old was also a target of Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez, who is seeking to bolster his squad in an attempt to gain promotion back to the Premier League.
However Newcastle alternatively signed fellow Fulham target Grant Hanley from Blackburn.
Amorebieta joined Fulham from Athletic Bilbao in 2013, making 48 appearances and scoring twice for The Cottagers.
The defender will be a valuable addition for Gijón, able to play at Centre Back and supply cover in the Left Back role. 10 years of Primera Division experience will be key for the club next season in La Liga.
The Venezuelans disciplinary record has been brought to light on numerous occasions and many fans will be happy to see an end to his tenure at the club.
I would like to personally thank Fernando for his services during his time at the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
I wish @FulhamFC all the best for the future.#FFC will be always in my heart.Thank you https://t.co/sTNOehNBsF #COYW pic.twitter.com/6aJiSyomfl
