The January transfer window is finally open, and the rumors have already began flying. The playoffs are still within reach, however, as a win against Ipswich Town will put Fulham just four points out of being in the playoffs.

Fulham are closer to the bottom tier of the league defensively, having conceded 33 goals in 25 games. One reason for this may be due to a talent issue, but also the lack of depth in talent. Beyond Tim Ream and Tomas Kalas, the center back position is pretty thin for a team trying to get promoted. Also, although these two have been decent, they aren’t nearly the quality that we should be looking for when anticipating a promotion. For that reason, it is believed that we will be bringing in a quality center back this transfer window.

Here are three options that Fulham should be looking at to bring in when the transfer window opens:

Mike van der Hoorn- The 25-year-old dutch center back was once renowned as one of the top talents coming out of The Netherlands. That seems to have gone downhill, as he finds himself struggling to find his place in the potential relegation contenders Swansea City. He comes with good experience, however, having played in the Europa League with Ajax and 25 total Premier League appearances. He still has time to develop into something special. Even until that point, he is a center back that can be a force on Fulham’s back-line. Standing at 6’3, and stronger than most opponents on the pitch, it may just be the missing piece of a decent manager to tap into this goldmine.

Marc Roberts- Roberts is a defender that you can pick up and put him right into your starting lineup. The 27-year-old English center back looked as if he was going to be the next big thing in the Championship with Birmingham City. That hasn’t been the case, however, as Birmingham have only played him 16 out of the 24 games played. The club seems to be going downhill fast, and they may need to make some panic moves in this transfer window. It would not be surprising if they allowed the ever-talented center back to walk at a decent price. Roberts has 56 Championship Division games under his belt, and could be a real force in the heart of the Fulham roster.

Connor Goldson- Goldson is a player that may need a few games to get acclimated, but could be one of the best center backs in the Championship if utilized correctly. The 25-year-old center back for Brighton & Hove Albion has played at just about every level, but has had difficulty breaking into the starting lineup. He has only appeared six times in their last two seasons, with only one appearance being in the 2017-18 season, due to heart-surgery he had to undergo in March. This could be the chance that Fulham are able to get a big center back with a great amount of potential. Goldson is also extremely versatile, as he also has been known to play right full back. Standing at 6’3, he has the size and strength to be a key piece for Fulham going forward.
